Most film fans will readily agree that one of the most important tasks which faced the producers of the Harry Potter films was getting the location for Hogwarts just right. Whilst it could be argued that there are many castles in the UK which could be used for this purpose, the correct choice would have to tick a number of boxes to ensure that a mistake was not made.
Not many people would argue then that in Alnwick Castle which is situated in the heart of Northumberland, the choice was absolutely perfect. Alnwick castle was used as Hogwarts for the first two Harry Potter films and the great thing is you can visit the castle and spend a great day looking around. It should be noted that there is lots to see and even without the Harry Potter connection it would still be a great place to visit.
Perhaps two of the most memorable scenes which feature Alnwick castle as well as being the most recognisable are the from the Philosopher’s Stone where Harry is being given a flying lesson and also from the Chamber Of Secrets where the Ford Anglia comes hurtling to the ground to make a crash landing.
When you see the castle for the first time the memories from the Harry Potter films will come flooding back and most people will agree that it is an extremely imposing spectacle and one which will get the children squealing with excitement as they know this is where they are heading. The entrance fee is on a par with similar stately homes and castles around the UK and when you consider the fun a family will have there it has to be regarded as value for money.
The owner of Alnwick castle is the Duke of Northumberland and he should be congratulated for embracing the Harry Potter films to such an extent that there are regular themed activities held throughout the year which makes this castle an even more magical experience for Harry Potter fans, both young and old.
Rather disappointingly the castle is closed for winter every year but it really is a great place to visit during the summer months and it is not one of those places where the children are bored after a couple of hours. It might be because of the Harry Potter connection but children are in their element when visiting Alnwick and don’t be to surprised if you love every minute of it as well.
